Since 2002, The Memory Band has been using old maps to navigate new directions in British Folk music, where digital machinery and acoustic instruments combine to make ‘traditional music from the future’. Led by producer and bassist Stephen Cracknell, and with a rolling cast of collaborators, the band mixes field-recordings of natural and industrial sounds with traditional melodies and original compositions. The ensemble made its name with an eponymous debut album released on their own Hungry Hill label and have forged a reputation as a live act at emerging British Festivals such as Green Man, End Of The Road and Homefires. They have released five studio albums to date, most recently ‘A Fair Field’ on the Static Caravan label in 2016. They have also produced music for film and television, and developed a series of associated live projects, including performances of the score of the classic film ‘The Wicker Man’; the ‘Balearic Folk Orchestra’, run in conjunction with film-director Kieran Evans, which re-interprets classic acid-house tracks; and ‘Children Of The Stones’, a musical journey through the British Library Sound Archive.
