Midori Takada is a Japanese composer and percussionist, cited as being a pioneer of ambient and minimalist music across Japan. Working with the Rias Berlin Symphony Orchestra in Berlin and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in the 1970s, Takada sought to disrupt traditional expectations of percussive sound practices, looking to African drumming, Indonesian gamelan, Korean traditional music, and Japanese Buddhist music.
A collaborative ethos to sonic explorations throughout her career, including the establishment of the Mkwaju Ensemble, however, her solo record Through The Looking Glass – originally released in 1983, brought her work to global attention following an underground transatlantic reissue in 2017.
