Felix Taylor: London Kings Cross
MSCTY_EXPO [REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL ZONE]

"Glover's Dream" takes us up into the starry-skied imagination of Charles Glover's airborne utopian future, and down into the shadows beneath it.
"Inspired by the blind optimism of this project, I really romanticised Architect Charles Glover's mad plan to put a circular airport just behind Kings Cross Station in the 1930s.
I wanted to imagine that excitement and feel the infinite possibilities that might arise from this idea."

artist notes
"Commercial air travel at that time was already an ultra modern, glamorous affair and the convenience of landing in Kings Cross would've been decadent to say the least.
I mapped out a field recording trip for the area. I sat by the canal, explored the Coal Rooms and the new developments.
The sun was shining, people were chatting and strolling around, it all felt very idealistic and forward thinking.
Of course, at some point reality comes crashing down.
You realise that placing 8 airport runways on high rise buildings – in the already rundown King Cross – would have probably created one of the most deprived areas in the city. An indulgent convenience for the city's richest inhabitants, blocking natural light for the heavily air and noise polluted streets below.
It reminded me of the dystopian LA in Blade Runner, smog filled and neon, with corners untouched by sunlight. I wanted to nod to Vangelis's sountrack [one of my favourites] in the piece's title and final movement.
The sense of optimism and wonder meeting an overblown reality
far less than ideal ... "
