"With an original focus on 3 geographical locations;
the Lord Line site,
which housed the offices of Marconi Marine Communications, and is now covered with graffiti
- two melodicas listening to each other in its spaces.
the packing line at GF Smith,
producing paper and envelopes for letters, books and other linguistic delivery systems.
the former site of the Rank Flour Mill,
referencing the history of film as entertainment and reportage in a city that at one point in the 1930’s had 36 cinemas, now almost all demolished or redeveloped.
Elements venture into more invisible forms of terrestrial signals; outmoded technologies, normally inaudible threads of radio, internet and electromagnetic waves mapping across spaces. A collection of answer-phone recordings between myself and my dad are a personal reflection, symbolic of private phone systems, tape-based answerphones, structures of soft memory. Generative virtual synthesisers as a mode of net-based transmission alongside the empty sound track of film stock. Field recordings of inter-species communication and our humorous attempts at imitation, of telephone lines along the humber, and cello, with its set of connections between personal histories, location and experience."
